"2nd Graders Learn How Art is Made" is a Palm Springs Unified School District art exhibit and the opening night fundraising auction event opens at Simeon Den Gallery on Saturday, September 9 from 5-8pm.  The exhibition will be on display through September 30.

This series of extraordinary paintings were made by second graders who participated in collaborative painting exercises during a four-week, PSUSD Artists in Residency program.

Professional artist, Charlie Ciali, devised the classes in conjunction with Louisa Castrodale, PSUSD Arts Coordinator.  He explains that he aspired to instruct students on ‘how art is made’ rather than  ‘how to make art.’  He continues, “I never gave them any instruction on how to make a line, hold a brush etc.  It was about the journey that all artists go through that is the message for them.   Understanding how art is made versus how to make art. Students were taught how artists become inspired, why artists make art, and how art is a universal language,”

The young artists were second grade students from Bella Vista Elementary, Della Lindley Elementary and Cathedral City Elementary schools.

Additionally, there will be an arts activity station where attendees and participating children can make art as part of the complimentary monthly Childrens Art Party sponsored by the SCRAP Gallery and the Cathedral City non-profit  Arts advocacy, Agnes Pelton Society.
